Kosovo: 'The war is about the mines'

Trepca Takeover

Two years ago, Diane Johnson reported that IGC, an international think tank that does osome of NATO's thinking, proposed that the Internationals seize the smelter using an environmental excuse. This week KFOR (NATO in Kosovo) did just that taking over the Zvecan smelting plant, part of the larger 40 mine Trepca mining complex. Wearing surgical masks (not gas masks?), troops stormed in and took over the plant.

The concern for the welfare of the citizens of Kosovo is touching. It does make you wonder why, then NATO, created the environmental catastrophe with the use of depleted uranium and cluster bombs in its very own bombing campaign against Yugoslavia.

And as detailed in Sara Flounders article of 1998, the ulterior motive behind all the humanitarian bluff was the extraordinary wealth in the tremendous mine complex of Trepca filled with the veins of lead, zinc, cadmium, gold and silver.

Thanks to the work of these two women, a journalist and an activist, the story behind the story of the Trepca mines come to light.

The blow by blow report comes from the Serbian Ministtry of Information. Following that is a section dedicated to depleted uranium and NATO. The excuse that the Zvecan smelting plant is damaging to the health of the women and children of Kosovo is laughable. The extensive damage done to the entire region of southeastern Europe by the Yugoslav bombing campaign of Yugoslav is brought to light by the International Action Center as well as articles in the press of several European countries.

How do they get away with it? For a peek into the thinking behind the bombing read into this week's editorial and go to the Johnson piece entitled, "Pro-NATO Thinktank Thought-up Excuse for Grabbing Trepca Smelter Plant".

Remember the cynical little movie about using a contrived war in Albania to distract the public from the 'sins' of the leadership? Well, welcome, to Planet Hollywood.
